SELECTION GUIDE

How to select a microbial air sampler: flow, volume and incubation workflow

Select a microbial air sampler to fit the sampling method, site operations and subsequent incubation workflow. Review flow and volume together with sampling-head or plate compatibility, sample handover and the link between sampling records and culture results.

How does a microbial air sampler differ from a particle counter?

A particle counter records airborne particles without identifying which can form colonies. With culture-based monitoring, a microbial air sampler collects samples for subsequent incubation and interpretation under the selected method. Online flow and timing records describe the sampling process; they are not real-time colony counts. Select each instrument for its own monitoring task.

How should sample flow and volume be considered together?

Flow describes the air drawn per unit of time; volume describes the total air drawn during a sample. Define flow, volume, frequency and expected duration together, and check how the instrument sets and records them. At steady flow, volume divided by flow estimates sampling time. The selected flow must remain appropriate for the sampling method and head.

What needs review for sampling heads, plates and handling?

For plate-based configurations, confirm head and plate dimensions, fitting arrangements and medium requirements, and assess access for loading and removal. Review cleaning, disinfection or sterilization methods together with material compatibility, following the selected equipment instructions and site procedures. Include post-sampling identification, closure, transport and handover in the operating workflow.

How should culture results be linked to sampling records?

Link each sample to its location, equipment identifier, sampling date and time, and sample volume, together with the medium and incubation conditions. Incubation time, temperature, colony interpretation and result calculations depend on the method used. Check methods and units before comparing results, and apply any count correction required by the applicable procedure.

What should be prepared for selection and a quotation?

Prepare the sampling method, locations and frequency, target volume, flow requirements, plate details, and cleaning and maintenance procedures. State whether sampling will be mobile or online at fixed locations. For online configurations, provide space, tubing, vacuum, power and communication conditions. Specify any FMS integration, required sampling records, and calibration and acceptance documentation to define the equipment and support scope.
